Joan Daries joined the NPO sector as a project manager and development practitioner. As most NGOs do not have dedicated fundraisers, her work always included fundraising. As the director of the Volunteer Centre, she soon doubled the income of the Centre, enabling it to move out of the offices of the Community Chest and operate independently. After managing the national programme for International Year of the Volunteer 2001, Joan was appointed as the Director of Volunteer South Africa, based in Tshwane. In this role she again had the added responsibility for fundraising in the organisation. On her return to Cape Town, Joan joined the Community Chest as a full time fundraiser. In her first year at Community Chest, she won a scholarship to attend the International Resource Mobilisation Conference in Holland. She also joined the fundraising training team at Community Chest. She now leads the fundraising training team as an accredited skills facilitator in fundraising. The Community Chest has just been awarded an NLC grant to offer Level 4 SAQA accredited fundraising skills programmes.
