Dave Portmann

Dave holds B.Sc. (Hons) in Environmental Science and Economics and MBA degrees from the University of Cape Town. He gained extensive on the ground experience evaluating retail development deals across Africa for the Shoprite Group during his three years at Douglas Parker Associates. While working in the retail and property sectors Dave sat on a number of project committees at the Bureau of Market Research, and guest lectured to the UCT Property Studies Masters class. After completing a full time MBA in 2010, Dave went on to head up USABCO’s hardware division for three and a half years. His article on decision making by private equity investors in South Africa was recently published in the South African Journal of Economic and Management Studies.

Dave co-founded Eighteen East Capital with Thomas Venon in 2014 after observing the need for specialist advisory and intermediation services in the impact investing and development finance sector. Eighteen East works with an established network of partners across Africa to connect impact businesses with international investors.
